Accessibility - The ability of a carrier to provide service between an origin and a destination.
Accessorial charges - A charge assed by a carrier for services proved in addition to basic transportation – for example, loading unloading, switching, and stop off.
AST&L - American Society of Transportation and Logistics.
ATA - American Trucking Associations; a trade group that is an umbrella over groups representing specialized motor carrier and state motor carrier associations.
Average cost - Total cost, fixed plus variable, divided by total output.

Back haul - Traffic for a return movement; also, to bring traffic back part way along a route on which it has already traveled.
Bill of lading - A document describing the conditions of carriage that serves as a contract between shipper and carrier.
Bonded warehouse - A warehouse where goods may be stored before the owner pays import duties or taxes on them.
Bracing - Securing a shipment inside a carrier’s vehicle to prevent damage.
Brokers - Companies that match up shippers and carriers; receiving a percentage of the freight charges as commission.
Bulk cargo - Cargo shipped in large quantities, without form or shape, and handled with a pump, shovel, or scoop.
Business logistics - The physical movement of goods from supply points to final sale to customers, and the associated transfer and holding of such goods as various intermediate storage points, accomplished in such a manner as to contribute to the explicit goals of the organization.
